This client in downtown Toronto presented us with an opportunity to combine safety and beauty when illuminating this lovely corner home. Like many downtown houses, there was only a slender front yard with no fence so the lighting system had to take into account public foot traffic and all that entails. Additionally, the gorgeous arched doorway was extremely dark, which posed security concerns.
Pot lights in the eaves would have not only added glare but forced the eye away from the lovely original soffit details. Instead, up-lights were carefully positioned to not only highlight the architectural details but also wash the walls without shining into the windows. This illuminated the eaves, added visually interesting shadow effects, and was a "beautiful safety" solution to add a warm welcome home every night.
